The Power of the Mastermind, Part 4: The Network of “Fewer Betters”

This is Part 4 of a five-part series on the Power of the Mastermind. If you have not yet read Part 3 of this series, you can do so here.

There are many facets to the power of the mastermind. In Part 3 of this series, we talked about how a mastermind creates growth in its members. All masterminds are founded on the concept of growth, but not all provide it in the same way or to the same extent. Identifying a mastermind that provides you with an environment that helps you grow in the directions that are best for you and your business is key to harnessing the power of the mastermind.

So far, we have talked about focus. We have talked about $1-million ideas and warnings. We have talked about getting out of your comfort zone and experiencing true, productive growth. These are things that are the foundation of the mastermind concept and have been for about 100 years now – really, even longer. In the Bible, it talks about how “in a multitude of counselors there is safety.” So, masterminds as a concept have been around a really long time.

Today, we are going to talk about who those counselors are. In a mastermind, those counselors become your network. This is the key to a successful life, a successful business, to almost anything you do. I believe your network is not just your net worth; it is your survival plan.

A Survival Plan Often Looks Like Good Business

In the Bible, there is a story about a king who is getting ready to fire one of his servants in his kingdom. He basically went to the person and said, “Hey, I’m going to get rid of you. Straighten up. This is your last chance. If it doesn’t work out, you’re gone.” This servant was the manager of the king’s money, so he went out to all of the different people who owed the king money and said, basically, “I’m going to make a deal with you. If you pay me such and such amount by a specific date, I will cut a deal with you on your debt.” It was pretty much the same thing collection agencies do today.

From the outside looking in, you might be thinking this guy was going about this all wrong. It was the king’s money. He probably should have gotten all the money for the king, right? Not really. At the time, the guy was building his network. He was going out to try and help people pay their debts and make the king money at the same time. He was really more focused on building his safety net, though, than collecting money. When he went back to the king and told him what he had done, the king actually told him he was a wise man. He kept him on.

Now, there are a lot of things we can learn from that story, but the one I want to get into right now is that it shows how valuable your network can be. It shows the value of your mastermind as well because in a mastermind, your network is a bunch of successful entrepreneurs, a bunch of successful business owners, a bunch of creative thinkers who want the best kind of success. In a good mastermind, that network is made up of people with whom you want to network and do deals with because you can believe what they say, you like them, and you trust them.

Why Your Network Needs “Fewer Betters”

There is a powerful advantage to working this way and with this type of network. When you have a network of people you believe, like, and trust, you can be extremely successful with a really small, elite network. In fact, you can actually say about your network, “I work with the fewer betters.” I didn’t say, “The fewer the better!” I said, “the fewer betters.” That means the few people who are better than the rest – and they’re in your corner thanks to your membership in the right mastermind.

So, in summary: You can educate yourself with books, with mentors, and with going to college. No matter how you educate yourself, however, the fewer betters, the people at the top, are still educating themselves by learning from each other. That is the power of the mastermind network.

Be part of an elect, select group of purpose-driven entrepreneurs who want to put themselves in front of other successful entrepreneurs. This is the best way to get to the top and, furthermore, the top people in your business know that the best way to educate themselves is to educate others.

I have a confession. When I started being in a mastermind, I was not in the top 5 percent of wage earners. I was not in the top 5 percent of people. I might still not be in the top 5 percent. But I try to be the best person I can be and to have good success even while I try to grow and get better at so many different things. And I’ll tell you something important: Now I am in the top 5 percent of wage earners. That may not mean much to you, but to me, it was a big deal. The only way that I got there, the single point of leverage, was being in the right mastermind. Being around my fewer betters gave me the opportunity to become a fewer better, at least in the sense of business success.

Why Do Masterminds Grow Success Like This?

When you are in a mastermind, you start thinking about things in a different way. You might not even realize it, but you are changing your mindset. Your new network changes the way you think – hopefully in a positive way!

So, that being the case, let me ask you a question: What is your network worth? If you were to have an issue for which you had to have an answer today, who are the top five people you would be asking for advice? For me, most of the people I would turn to, I found in a mastermind.

So if you want to network with your fewer betters and if you want to be a fewer better, then you have to hang out with the fewer betters. The place to do that is in a mastermind. Jim Rohn said it best when he said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

Ask yourself:

  • Who are you spending your time with?
  • How do you get into those groups where the fewer betters are and then spend time with them?

I hope this helps you today. I hope you have a great day. And remember, live life on purpose, and work to have to give.

I encourage you to find the right mastermind for you. It is an investment of Time, Talent, and Money, but once you make the investment your life and business will never be the same again!
