This is Part 1 of a five-part series on the Power of the Mastermind. If you have not yet read my introduction to this series, “The Absolute Best Way to Educate Yourself for Good Success,” you can do so here.
The power of the mastermind comes in many ways, but the first thing that comes to mind when I think about the power of the mastermind is this one word: Focus.
A good mastermind gets people out of their business long enough to force them to focus on their business instead of being in their business. Focus is something we all need help with, and it is the one important ingredient to success that you can never get around. You will simply never be successful unless you focus! You usually cannot see what is going on in your business until you get outside of it and look at it from an outside perspective! When you get out of your business, you can look at it from a purposeful mindset. It gives you the opportunity to ask yourself why you do what you do in the first place.
Focus is Much More Than Self-Evaluation
The power of the mastermind also lies in the part of the process wherein you look at other people’s businesses and learn from them while gaining insight from those same people as they look at your business and see things that you cannot see because you are simply “too close” to the process. In the bible, Matthew asks other Christians, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own?” Basically, he was saying that it can be very difficult to see your own problems and very easy to identify someone else’s problems. Although in that instance Matthew was chastising his audience, he was, essentially, demonstrating the power of the mastermind today!
It is simply easier for you to see issues and potential opportunities in others’ businesses way before you can see them in your own! One of the members of the Good Success Mastermind told me at our last meeting, “I have no idea how I have acquired so many properties in the last 3 quarters.” He did not even see what he was doing differently! I told him, “This is simple. You have been at the mastermind and you have been focused.” This member is an investor who had spent the previous 10 years inside his business never looking outside of it or gaining focus. He thought he was focused, but really, he was just consumed. He had to escape what he thought was focus in order to really focus, and the Good Success Mastermind helped him do that.
How Much are You Worth to Your Business?
In your business there are $10/hour tasks, $25/hour tasks, $50/hour tasks, and $100/hour tasks. Those obviously yield increasing value, and they all must get done. However, before you start congratulating yourself for doing that $10/hour task and really staying in your business, think about what you are missing because you did not take the time to pick your head up and take a good look around. Sure, you did a task that needed doing, but even doing the $100/hour tasks can be blinding if you are not careful.
Getting outside your business and really refining your focus lands you the ability to start doing $1,000/hour tasks, $10,000/hour tasks, and even the priceless tasks you have been wishing someone would help you figure out but never had the brainpower to put toward them. A well-run mastermind will prioritize your focus and help you reach these goals while you help others achieve them as well.
Please leave us your comments and let us know how masterminds have helped you get out of your business and work on your business instead of in your business, or how they have helped you make more money thanks to having an outsider’s perspective.
I encourage you to find the right mastermind for you. It is an investment of Time, Talent and Money, but once you make the investment your life and business will never be the same again!
