The Good Success 7-Step Plan for Mapping Your 2020 Goals

The Good Success 7-Step Plan for Mapping Your 2020 Goals

We’re just under two weeks into 2020, and I am still seeing so many positive posts online hearing so many positive things in person about the New Year. We are still in that “rose-colored-glasses” phase of the year, when everyone is telling themselves and everyone around them that:

  1. Things are going to be the best yet this year
  2. Things are going to change in really big, really positive ways this year
  3. They have plenty of time to make those changes

At the risk of being a bit of a downer here, I have to warn you:

Most of you are not doing anything that will actually make 2020 substantially different for you than 2019.

Do you disagree with me? Okay. Answer the following question honestly. Don’t worry: You don’t have to post your answer in public!

Have you mapped out your goals for this year?

If you have not sat down and mapped out your goals for 2020 yet, then, so far, you are only talking the talk. You are not walking the walk.

Now, let me ask you another question:

What goal would you set if you knew you could not fail?

That’s a very common question, but most people do not take it seriously. Even more discouraging for me as a mentor, most people are afraid to take it seriously. People experience real fear at the thought that their goals might not be big enough, important enough, or “noble” enough. They would rather just talk about things changing than sit down at a table with pen and paper (or computer and keyboard) and map a real, lasting change out.

But wait a minute! You are a member of the Good Success community! That means you do not let this fear control your life! Now, let’s get cracking at planning something really worthwhile in 2020. Don’t worry. You can use the Good Success 7-Step Plan.

Step 1: State your goals clearly.

This means think about them until you have identified something that would really create positive change in an important area of your life.

Step 2: Get it out of your head.

It’s time to articulate your goals. Say them out loud. Explain them to a partner, friend, or trusted colleague.

Step 3: Write your goals down.

Now that you can talk about them, it’s time to put them on paper. Write your goals down.

Step 4: Create a process for achieving your goals.

Identify the things that need to happen in order for you to achieve your goals. Write down those things as well as the processes you will need to implement in order to make those changes.

Step 5: Give yourself a timetable.

Right now, you’re thinking you have lots of time, but it will be March, then July, then October and nearly the holidays before you know it. Make a timetable that is realistic and stick to it.

Step 6: Create accountability.

Tell everyone on your team about your plan. It’s not just a goal anymore; it’s a real live action plan and you need to be held accountable! Tell your spouse. Tell the people in your mastermind. Tell everyone so you cannot slip through the cracks and avoid being accountable for getting this done!

Step 7: Take action!

You have the first step written down. Go do it!

Make 2020 the best year ever!
